Two events are planned at the Alleghany Fairgrounds this weekend — the annual New River Shrine Club Car Show and the Quilter's Guild's quilt show.
Car Show
The 27th annual car show will begin on Friday, July 28 at the Alleghany Fairgrounds with a barbecue supper from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. The supper will cost $5 per plate. After the supper, car enthusiasts will ride through downtown Sparta from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m.
Meanwhile, an all-you-can-eat country ham breakfast is planned at the Sparta Masonic Lodge, 59 East Doughton St., from 7 a.m. until 9 a.m. The cost of the breakfast is $6.
The actual car show will begin the following day, Saturday, at 8 a.m. and entries will be accepted through noon. Admission for the car show is $5, but children under 12 get in free. Awards will be presented beginning at 4:30 p.m. The event annually draws more than 100 entries.
Quilt Show
The Alleghany Quilters Guild will host its tenth annual quilt show at the Emerson Black Exhibition Building at the Alleghany Fairgrounds. There is no admission charge for the show.
The show begins at noon on Friday and closes at 6 p.m. It will then re-open at 10 a.m. on Saturday and end at 4 p.m. The winners of the show will be announced at the end of the day Saturday. The event will feature displays of the work of local and area quilters, as well as audience participation.
"We're very excited about this year's show," said Guild Treasurer Delta Peterson. "We'll again be featuring the drawings for children's mini-quilts—very beautiful small quilts."
A total of 97 entries are ready to display for the show, the largest number of entries in several years, Peterson said.
June Furlow, a guild member, is the featured artist. Furlow did the "Alleghany County Poster," said Peterson.
"She is also paints, sketches, weaves and quilts as well as having musical talents," she added. "Her work is on display and for sale at the Alleghany Arts and Crafts Store on Main Street, Sparta."
Furlow will be at the show both days and also will have many of her works on display.
In addition, the guild members have worked with the Alleghany 4-H
Club to assist them in making their first quilts, said Peterson.
"Their quilts will also be on exhibit at the show," she said.
