A Statesville man was killed and his passenger was critically injured June 15 at 3:50 p.m. when his motorcycle was struck nearly head-on by a pickup in his lane of travel on N.C. 18 about 13 miles south of Sparta, according to a report filed by Trooper R.L. Lane of the N.C. Highway Patrol.
Killed was Billy Joe Fleming, 39, of Statesville. Tammy Fleming, wife of the decedent and a passenger on the motorcycle, was in serious condition Tuesday afternoon after being transported to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center (N.C. Baptist) Saturday, according to a hospital spokesperson.
Charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle following the accident was
28-year-old Jose Diego Pena Martinez of Laurel Springs.
According to the report, Fleming was traveling north on N.C. 18 on a
2003 Harley Davidson motorcycle and the 1987 GMC driven by Martinez
was headed south. The GMC traveled into a curve, crossed the
centerline into Fleming's lane of travel and struck the motorcycle.
