The North Carolina Symphony will present its Summer Pops Concert July 20, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Sparta School. Tickets cost $10 at the door, children and students through 12th grade are not charged for admission.
This year, the goal for the Alleghany Committee for the N.C. Symphony is to raise $17,000 in donations. The money raised will go to fund two concerts, the July 20 concert and a musical educational program for the elementary school students in Alleghany County that will be presented by the North Carolina Symphony Organization. The performance for the elementary students is slated to be held during the 2006-07 school year.
The symphony will be led by Resident Conductor William Henry Curry as they play selections including John Williams' "Olympic Fanfare" from "E.T.," selections from "West Side Story", "Coppelia." "The Nutcracker" and "Spartacus." The symphony will also perform a tribute to Henry Mancini.
"We would love to have the adults come out," commented Genia George with the Alleghany Arts Council, who also serves as the Symphony Committee Co-chair. "There is a wonderful selection of music. The educational program for the children during the school year is so important because this is probably one of the few times they will be exposed to symphonic music and the instruments used by an orchestra." For more information about the symphony performance, contact George at 363-9190.
To make a tax-deductible contribution, make the check payable to AEF/
