The members of the Alleghany County Board of Education approved the interim budget resolution for the 2006-07 fiscal year during a June 30 meeting. Board members Faron Atwood and Charles Joines were absent.

To meet quorum requirements, board member Clarence Crouse participated in the meeting via speakerphone. Crouse was out of town and called to participate in the meeting via his cellular phone.

The Alleghany County Commissioners allocated $2,117,647 to the local school board, a $198,422 increase over their allocation for the 2005-06 fiscal year.

Through a video presentation last month, school principals, directors of programs and others made their cases to the members of the Alleghany County Commission for $2,392,427 budget allocation and a request for $728,935 to fund capital outlay expenses. Karen Leys, who serves as the finance director for Alleghany County Schools, explained the board would be unable to adopt its final budget resolution until after July 1.

"The board is obligated to adopt an interim budget resolution for the purpose of paying salaries and the ordinary expenses of the administrative unit during the interval between the ordinary expenses of the administrative unit during the interval"
