The Alleghany County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the county's 2006-2007 fiscal-year budget on Monday, resulting in a 10-cent tax rate increase for property owners.
The new tax rate is 70 cents per $100 in property value, up from 60 cents per $100. The new rate will be levied on the valuation of property listed for taxes as of Jan. 1, 2006. The tax rate is based on an estimated total valuation of property for the purpose of taxation at $1,080,657,645 and an estimated tax collection rate of 95.9 percent. The general fund of the new budget, used for the operation of the county government and its activities for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2006 and ending June 30, 2007, totals $14,107,496.
Of that figure, $7,165,200 is projected to come from the current year's property tax and penalties, $2,398,536 comes from local option 1 percent and one-half percent sales taxes, $1,770,704 comes from state and federal aid – Social Services Administration, $852,600 comes from county fees and services revenues, $511,281 comes from transfers and other revenues, $452,216 comes from revenues from the state, $347,552 comes from fund balance appropriation, $263,007 comes from law enforcement, court and jail revenues, $216,400 comes from rents-interest and miscellaneous revenues and $130,000 comes from the prior year's property tax.
"The general fund is the fund that pretty much affects our general
public tax base," explained County Manager Don Adams as presented the
proposed budget during a public hearing at Monday's meeting.
