In 1936, a group of local ladies gathered at the Alleghany home of Mrs. R.L. Doughton, where they discussed ways to better the community. Seventy years later, the civic club, known as the Sparta Woman's Club, is still going strong as it continues to have an association with local projects. Last Thursday, ladies gathered at Olde Beau Country Club for a luncheon to celebrate the milestone.
After President Pat Polley welcomed the members, current and former, and relatives of former members, she gave those in attendance a brief history of the Sparta Woman's Club.
"It was quite interesting to go back through the old books and take a
look at the history of the club," Polley said.
