The Alleghany County Board of Commissioners was presented a budget plan on May 31 that includes a seven-cent tax increase. County Manager Don Adams said the proposed county budget is $13,808,510, which is an increase of about 8.8 percent from the current year's budget total of $12,693,702 (as of May 30).
The county is facing total requests of $14,1976,138 this year.
Adams said that five positions were requested, but not included, in
this year's budget. Those include upgrades of the Alleghany Public
Library's part-time position to full time (20 hours per week to 40
hours with benefits) at a cost of $14,366, an interpreter for Social
Services at a total cost of $30,438.92, minus state reimbursement of
$19,319, for a total of $11,119.92. Other position requests included
increasing the veteran's office to 1,000 hours per year at a cost of
$6,877.35, upgrading the tax office's administrative assistant to
full-time permanent at a cost of $13,507.40, and upgrading the
administrative assistant's position at the Board of Elections from 75
percent to 100 percent at a cost of $6,753.50.
