A middle school referendum was put on hold after school officials requested the move. The referendum, earlier planned for this fall, needs to be put on hold to prevent the school system from "setting ourselves up for failure," said Superintendent Jeff Cox.
Cox was representing the school system during a June 1 meeting with the Alleghany County Commissioners. Prior to beginning the school's budget presentation to the commissioners, Cox said the members of the board of education are opting to table the resolution (to support a referendum) until "a later time."
"As much as everybody wants it to go forward right now, the timing of
it, we're just fearful we're setting ourselves up for failure (by)
putting it on the November ballot," Cox said. "With things unfolding as
they have over the last month or so, we just don't feel that it could
have its best shot in November. We didn't take any action to pass that
resolution. In fact, they (board of education members) took the action
to table the resolution until a later time. When that later time is, I
think is going to be probably after November elections are finished."
