Several local fire departments took part in a propane fire extinguishing training exercise that was held on Saturday, sponsored by G&B Energy and Wilkes Community College. A total of 36 firemen attended, including volunteers from Sparta-Alleghany, Cherry Lane, Piney Creek and Laurel Springs. Glade Creek firemen could not attend due to a scheduling conflict, but plan to hold another propane training class in the near future. .

The most recent class, held at the new Napco location on Trojan Avenue in Sparta, spanned two days, beginning Friday night with classroom work and concluding Saturday with the live burn

The instructor was Mitch Calloway of Surry County. "The fire departments would like to thank G&B Energy and Wilkes Community College for holding the class and Napco for the use of their parking lot," said Sparta-Alleghany Chief Terry McGrady.
