Runoff election is May 30

A runoff election for the Republican Party will be held on May 30. The runoff involves two Republican candidates for Alleghany County

Commission who are seeking their party's nomination for the fall election.

Facing off are incumbent Commissioner Sandy Carter Herndon and challenger William "Bill" Caudill. Herndon edged Caudill by about a five-percent margin in the first primary, which was held on May 2.

A headline in last week's newspaper incorrectly listed that date as May 27, which is actually the final date for one-stop voting. One stop voting begins today (May 18) and ends at 1 p.m. on May 27, the only Saturday on which the one stop polling place will be open. Thus far, a total of two absentee ballots have been requested.

In the final results that were reported in the canvass signed by the board of elections on May 8, Eldon Edwards was the top vote-getter with 434 votes (32 percent) and Doug Murphy (30 percent) was second with 404. Coming in third and fourth were Herndon with 288 votes (21 percent), and Caudill with 221 votes (16 percent). A candidate who fails to earn a seat but is still within 10 percent of his or her nearest challenger may call for a runoff.

Caudill said he is calling for the run off due to voting irregularities, which have been cited and apologized for by the Alleghany Board of Elections, which has stated that about five unaffiliated voters in the Cranberry District were not given the proper ballot choice.
