With the support of friends made during her time in post offices in Alleghany and surrounding counties, Kim Reeves took the position of postmaster at the Glade Valley Office in mid-April. Reeves took the position vacated by Elaine Osborne, who retired in October 2005. Carmen McMillian served as the officer in charge in the interim.
Reeves said she was “so glad and thankful” after being offered the position of postmaster.
Prior to taking the Glade Valley postmaster position, Reeves stated she had “thought about it for some time. I’ve been on officer in charge assignments in different offices,” she said. Reeves has served as the officer in charge at post offices in Laurel Springs, Ennice, Sparta and Thurmond. She has also served as a clerk at the Sparta and West Jefferson post offices.
Speaking of her service as officer in charge at post offices, Reeves said, “It was an experience and I needed it to get here. I missed everybody in the county. When the opportunity came, I put in, hoping that I could get it (the Glade Valley postmaster position) so I could be back in the county and help my customers.”
Reeves stated it was preferred for a potential postmaster to serve as an officer in charge at post offices prior to attaining the postmaster status.
“It’s a learning experience and it helps you get ready to have your own office,” Reeves explained.
Since joining the Glade Valley Post Office last month, Reeves commented, “ I’ve met a lot of nice people and I hope to serve them very well.
When asked about why she accepted the postmaster position, Reeves
replied jokingly, “I realized I have to work probably the next 30 or 40
years of my life.” Then, on a more serious note, Reeves said, “Being a
part-time flexible clerk, I was guaranteed full-time benefits, but I
was not guaranteed 40 hours a week.
