Former Sparta Town Councilman George Mack Irwin died Sunday, May 7, at Sardis Oaks Nursing Home in Charlotte.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at noon at First Baptist Church of Sparta on May 12. The family will receive friends at the church from 11 a.m. until noon.
Irwin, a councilman for about 35 years, served as mayor pro tem for many of those years. He was active on many local boards, including being the chairman of the Blue Ridge Opportunity Commission (BROC).
In addition, Irwin was co-owner of Irwin Chevrolet in Sparta for more than 50 years with his brother, Ulus.
Irwin is survived by his wife of 52 years, Patsy, and three sons and one daughter.
