After a hearing of about one-and-a-half hours on Monday night at the Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation conference room, the Alleghany County Board of Commissioners tabled a vote on a proposed land use plan. The plan, termed a Property Rights Protection Ordinance, was received with varying degrees of opposition, concern and confusion by those in attendance.
Those who helped author the ordinance made several attempts to explain it to the others.
Some voiced concerns that they might lose some rights under the ordinance, the final version of which was first unveiled at the meeting. The planning board, made up of the same five men and women as the county commission, had reviewed the plan earlier and made some changes. In addition, sections on mobile home parks, junkyards and recreational vehicle parks were also added.
Prior to the public hearing, Planner Amy Pardue gave a brief overview
of the ordinance through a computerized presentation that was displayed
on a pull-down screen.
