Storm packs high winds; downs trees

Wind gusts close to 40 miles and hour and reports of thunder and lightning were reported in Alleghany over the weekend and into Monday, resulting in trees falling in parts of the county and several electrical outages.

According to information provided by the State Climate Office of North Carolina, reports of wind gusts as high as 38.8 miles per hour were reported at the Jefferson Airport in Laurel Springs. According to reports, maximum wind speed increased significantly in the early hours Monday morning, when the reported maximum winds speeds increased from 7.6 miles per hour at 2 a.m. to 38.8 miles per hour at 3 a.m.
