Land use ordinance is moving forward

A land use ordinance moved one step closer to approval as members of the county commission agreed to accept the document from the planning board.

The move was more of a rubber stamp motion, since the members of the planning board are exactly the same as the members of the county commission.

The document, titled, “Property Rights Protection Ordinance,” was first introduced by the Alleghany Planning Committee, a citizen group formed by the county, to the planning board at a meeting held on March 20.

Although the commissioners agreed at their meeting on April 3 to schedule a public hearing on the document, which was developed over the past nine months, the date for the hearing had not been publicized as of presstime Tuesday.

County Manager Don Adams said Tuesday that the hearing will likely be held during the commissioners’ first meeting in May, scheduled for May 1 at 6:30 p.m.

At a meeting on March 30, the planning board went through the document page by page, with several minor changes being made.

Commissioner Ken Richard-son, who serves as chairman of the planning board, noted that the time spent at the planning meeting would save time at the commission meeting.

Commission Chair Eldon Edwards noted at that meeting, “To me, this is a very well put together document.” He said there are some minor changes that need to be made, but said the Property Rights Protection Ordinance (PRPO) is a good ordinance.

Commissioner Sandy Carter noted, “I’m very well satisfied with what’s been placed before us.”
