39th annual WCOK ended on a good note on Feb. 25, with a total fund-raising amount of $7,641. Last year’s second Saturday raised $6,896. The auction’s two-week total was $15,042, up from $12,310 last year.

The total was the highest raised since 2003, when $15,770 was the two-week total. The overall total in 2004 was $14,343.

“That’s a pretty good total for Alleghany County,” said Virginia Setzer of this year’s result. “We’re always glad to beat the year before, but our goal is to do the best we can.”

The top seller for the auction was dinner service for four from Mangum Pottery, which sold for $800. A wormy chestnut pie safe made by John Wayne and Carol Edwards was the top seller for the entire auction, raising $1,000.

A quilt made by Setzer, Delta Peterson and the New Haven Quilters sold for $425.

“We also had a lot of music and received good bids on that,” she said. Tom Atwood’s blanket chest, made of solid cherry, brought $325. Setzer said the majority of the items sold during the auction have been picked up and paid for, but still some remain to be picked up at the Carolina Silk Shop at 24 West Whitehead Street (N.C. 18 south of the intersection with U.S. 21).

As for the second Saturday, a total of 127 items were sold for $4,831, while 71 donations helped raise another $2,810.
