Fender to leave director’s position effective March 3

Director of Elections Karen K. Fender submitted her resignation to the Alleghany County Board of Elections during a brief meeting on Monday. Fender said she is leaving the position of director, which she has held since March 1, 1995, to work with a construction company as a project manager/office manager.

“I accepted a position with 5-Star Construction in Elkin,” Fender said in an interview on Tuesday. “When I started here, it was a challenge. I feel like the office has improved and evolved over the years. “I and the board have worked hard to make this office the best it can be,” she added.

Fender said the move to the construction field will allow her to develop new skills and abilities and give her a change of pace from the hectic schedule of the board of elections.
