With less than a week of filing remaining, two of three incumbents have filed for re-election on the Alleghany County Board of Education. However, only one of three incumbent commissioners have filed to run for office.

Filing opened on Feb. 13 at noon and will end on Feb. 28 at noon. The primary election for each party will take place on May 2, while the general election is set Nov. 7.

Filing fees for each office are listed with the candidates for office. Fees are generally based on the salary for the office being sought. For sheriff and clerk of court, the fee represents 1 percent of the annual starting salary for the job.

As for the board of education, Democrat incumbents Betsy Doughton Dillon of Skyland Drive in Sparta and Clarence Crouse of Little River Drive have both filed. Crouse filed on Feb. 20, while Dillon filed on Feb. 14.

The third incumbent, Chairman Charles Joines, has not filed for re-election as of Tuesday afternoon.

The filing fee for that office is $5 per candidate.

On the Alleghany County Commission, only one incumbent had filed as of Tuesday. Sandy Carter Herndon of Cheek Street. Incumbents Democrat Graylen Blevins and Republican Chair Eldon Edwards had not filed as of Tuesday.

Newcomer Democrat Greg Blevins of Independence Road in Sparta filed to run for commissioner on Feb. 14. Greg Blevins, who is the brother of incumbent Graylen Blevins, farms and works at Charleston Forge.

Also filing last week was Milly B. Richardson, a farmer and former town council member and newspaper publisher.

The filing fee for that office is $10 per candidate.
