The trial of former Alleghany County Sheriff’s Deputy Ricky James Lyall will begin Friday with jury selection, according to information obtained from the Alleghany Sheriff’s Department.
“That’s what we understand,” said Sheriff Mike Caudill, who noted federal prosecutors are handling the case.
Agents from the State Bureau of Investigation and Federal Bureau of Investigation made a visit to the Law Enforcement Center in Sparta, apparently doing final preparations for the case, earlier this week. Actual court proceedings are expected to begin as early as Tuesday of next week (Jan. 17), the day following the federal holiday for Martin Luther King Jr.
Lyall had an appearance in U.S. District Court for the Western District
of North Carolina in Statesville on Monday, Jan. 9. Sheriff Caudill
said that he was not at the proceedings Jan. 9, nor was anyone from his
department.
