The Alleghany County commissioners, acting as a planning board, on Dec. 19 approved a variance request for an upscale development that lacked required road right of way. The request was filed by a Twin Oaks property owner, Christopher H. “Chris” Barrett.
Barrett, the owner of 130 acres of land in the Gap Civil Township, requested that he be allowed to subdivide his land into 17 lots, including an approximately 32-acre lot he had set aside for himself. Even without the variance, Barrett could have created 13 lots, but was requesting that he be allowed to create 17 lots without the required 50 foot right of way.
The request marked the first ever request sent to the county planning board, which was created by the commissioners and it consists of the same members as its parenting body.
Barrett’s development, Shadow Ridge, overlooks New River, not far from Golf Course Road. However, one section of roadway that serves as the proposed development’s entrance, through Buckeye Ridge Run, only had a 20-foot road right of way.
Barrett has a 30-foot road right of way through another property, then
has 50 foot rights of way allotted for roads within the development,
which will be improved and paved with underground utilities, he said.
