Jobs up in region; down here

Western North Carolina gained more than 3,000 new jobs in October and economic activity for the region rose .3 percent as indicated in the WNC Economic Index.

Superintendent Jeff Cox said he anticipated having a proposal regarding the eight-classroom and multi-purpose room addition at Sparta School ready for the members of the Alleghany County Board of Education to vote on during its Dec. 7 meeting at the central office.

Piney Creek man shot in leg by wife

A Piney Creek man was injured in what is initially being investigated as an accidental shooting that took place on Friday evening, according to Sheriff Mike Caudill of the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Department.
