Timothy Dwayne Shatley was only about three miles from his Ashe County home after another commute to the Wilkesboros late Saturday night (Nov. 19) when a single shot from a high-powered firearm ended his life. Shatley, 30, a former resident of Alleghany County, was driving home from working at a North Wilkesboro restaurant when he apparently stopped in the northbound lane of N.C. 16 he was traveling just past a new bridge under construction over the North Fork of the New River in the Grassy Creek community, said Sgt. Steve Houck of the Ashe Sheriff’s Department.
“His driver’s side window was open so we feel he might have stopped to talk to someone he knew or someone might have flagged him down,” said Houck.
“We do believe he stopped in his lane of travel.... Old Field Creek
Road intersects with N.C. 16 on the north side of the bridge and we
believe the person (Shatley encountered) could have been parked there.”
