Trees headed for White House to make stop at Courthouse

United States Rep. Virginia Foxx (N.C.-5) and North Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture Steve Troxler will speak in front of the Alleghany County Courthouse in Sparta at 1 p.m. Nov. 25, in a ceremony dispatching Christmas trees from Alleghany bound for the White House.

Veterans honored at schools

Veterans were honored during two Veteran’s Day ceremonies held at the schools last Thursday; Alleghany High held its ceremony at 10 a.m., while Glade Creek held its ceremony at 1:30 p.m.

In 1955, Sparta Florist opened its doors to provide floral needs to the community. Now, 50 years later, the florist has a customer base of more than 3,500 and according to current co-owner Martha Walker, the business is continuing to grow.

Lyall’s trial set Jan. 9

The federal court trial of former Alleghany County Sheriff’s Deputy Ricky James Lyall was continued until Jan. 9, 2006, according to documents on file at the U.S. District Court Office for the Western District of North Carolina in Statesville.
