Veterans events planned

Three services honoring the men and women who have served in the armed forces will be held throughout the county, with two services scheduled for today and one to be held Sunday.

The high school’s Veteran’s Day assembly is scheduled for 10 a.m. today in the new gym, while a similar ceremony will be held at 1:30 p.m. in the gym at Glade Creek. Sunday’s ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. at New Covenant Church, which is located on N.C. 18 north in Ennice.

Eldon Edwards, who serves as the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7034 commander, commented Tuesday, “Veteran’s Day is dedicated to the living veterans in honor of their service to their country. We give the schools an opportunity to get involved in it and I think that is a good thing.”

History

The origin of Veteran’s Day dates back to 5 a.m., Nov. 11, 1918, the anniversary of the Armistice, which was signed in the Forest of Compiegne by the Allies and Germans, putting end to World War I after four years of conflict. The day not only resulted in a laying down of arms, but impromptu parades and closing of businesses to celebrate the event.
