Several county offices will be working toward relocating to the new Alleghany County Office Building later this week, including the tax office, register of deeds, building inspections, mapping office and planning and recreation.
All of the office phone numbers will remain the same. Most of the offices relocating to the new building, which is at 348 South Main Street in the former location of the Cash and Carry grocery store, are moving from the Alleghany County Courthouse. Exceptions are building inspections and planning and recreation, both of which are moving from the current county office building.
The Register of Deeds will be open all this week in the Alleghany County Courthouse, but will be closed to the public on Friday beginning at noon. The office will reopen in the new location on Monday, Oct. 17 at 8 a.m. “We are striving to make a smooth transition with as little interruption to your access to the office as possible,” said a release from the office.
Meanwhile, the Alleghany County Tax Office started moving on Tuesday, said Tax Administrator Mary Walker. The office telephone system was to be switched over from the Alleghany Courthouse to the new office building by Wednesday at 3 p.m.
The office will be completely moved and open for business in the new building by Thursday morning at 8 a.m.
“It’s just a lovely new building,” she said. “I’ve been in the courthouse as of Oct. 10 for 25 years, the space is very limited. We’re looking forward to being in our new location because it is much more accessible to the public. It offers better parking and there are no stairs to climb up and down.”
The mapping office was set to close on Wednesday by noon and be re-opening in the new building by Thursday morning at 8 a.m. “We’ve been moving what we can,” she said. “We’re looking forward to moving in. We’re going to have a lot more space.”
Currently, the office has sign equipment stored in the Courthouse
basement. “We would have to go down there and cut out the letters for
our signs and bring them up here.
