Locals remark on efforts to aid Gulf Coast hurricane victims

Following the devastation on the Gulf Coast, citizens in Alleghany felt the call to lend a hand. Many were left in need after Hurricane Katrina devastated residents in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

County offices are set to move this week

Several county offices will be working toward relocating to the new Alleghany County Office Building later this week, including the tax office, register of deeds, building inspections, mapping office and planning and recreation.

Caudill uses artwork to raise funds

Lisa Caudill, an Alleghany residents who formerly lived in Louisiana, recently made a contribution to the hurricane relief effort by expressing her emotions surrounding the hurricane devastation through her painting.

N.C. Senator Richard Burr made a stop in Alleghany County on Tuesday at Alleghany High School as part of a 13-county sweep of the region.

Three local events are planned this week

Local residents will have several events to keep them busy this weekend, starting tonight with Sparta-Alleghany Volunteer Fire Department’s annual fire parade and culminating Saturday with a Wellness Fest and the annual Hillbilly Show at Sparta School.

Sparta to refinance Town Hall to help increase fund balance reserves

The members of the Sparta Town Council gave permission to Town Manager Bryan Edwards to request permission from the Local Government Commission to refinance the remaining $336,000 balance owed on the Town Hall over a period of 10 years during an Oct. 5 meeting.
