The Alleghany County Sheriff’s Department, acting on a tip, cut down and destroyed 556 marijuana plants on private property in the southeastern end of the county. Sheriff Mike Caudill said the plants, valued at $667,200, were found about one mile off Oklahoma Road Sept. 14.

The plants were destroyed by fire and buried at the old landfill Sept. 15. Deputies Todd Ramage, Bryan Maines, Tim Billings, Sheriff Mike Caudill, Brandon Hanson and Steve Carrier worked from 10 p.m. until 4 a.m. cutting and loading the plants — some of the largest ever found here.
