About 1,150 people attended the lawnmower race at the Alleghany Fairgrounds last Saturday night. The fairgrounds also concluded a July 30 race earlier in the afternoon. The July 30 race had been postponed due to rain.
The races were part of the Alleghany Chevrolet’s Alleghany Mower Racing Association (AMRA) racing series and were sponsored by the Cherry Lane Fire Department, according to AMRA spokesperson Walt Greene.
“All the fire departments in the county participated in helping work at the track and help promote the race,” he said. He added that all the funds raised went to Donald Crouse, who was injured during a May 7 race. “We raised a substantial amount of money,” Greene noted, adding about 111 mowers participated in the night event.
“We want to thank everybody in the county who helped out on this,” Greene said. “The main point person on this was Kenneth Miles, the fire chief at Cherry Lane.”
