Heritage fest set Sept. 24

Live music, heritage demonstrations, arts and crafts, good food, and kids activities highlight the 2005 Mountain Heritage Festival scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 24, in downtown Sparta. Activities for the whole family run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and admission is free.

Harvest Wind, a hard-driving bluegrass-gospel band from the Statesville headlines festival entertainment. Area bands with a local following, the Phoenix Mountain Band and the Rise n’ Shine Band, are slated to play. The Rise n’ Shine musicians are a house band for the Alleghany Jubilee, a popular traditional music venue in Sparta. An appearance by a local trio purporting to be the Soggy Bottom Boys is scheduled.

The Appalachian Hoedowners from Crockett, Virginia, headline traditional dance performances. They are joined by the Clogettes from Traphill and performances by the Dance Place in Sparta.

“Several new activities are planned for this year,” Bob Bamberg, Chamber Director said. “There will also be a flatfoot competition. Throughout the day, contestants will be vying for a spot in the final showdown at 4:30 p.m.”

There’s no change to compete. Preliminary competitions are tentatively scheduled for 11:30 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. at the Main Stage at the intersection of U.S. 21 and N.C. 18 and all competitors need to do is show up ready to dance. For more information contact the competition organizer, Agnes Joines, at 372-4591 or 657-1441.

“We also plan to have a pickers tent set up on North Main Street where musicians are invited to jam,” Bamberg continued.
