Mower race is Saturday

A benefit lawnmower race is scheduled for this Saturday at the Alleghany County Fairgrounds. Proceeds from the race will benefit Donald Crouse, who was injured in a legends race earlier this year. Crouse suffered serious injuries in a mower racing accident May 7 and spent a number of weeks in the hospital.

In addition, the race will serve as a “make-up” for an earlier event in North Wilkesboro that was rained out. Racing action is expected to begin at 4 p.m. and continue until around 10 p.m.

Walt Green, spokesman for the Alleghany Mower Racing Association, said that more than 100 mowers are expected to compete. “We’ll be running the nine main events that we didn’t complete in North Wilkesboro on July 30,” Green said. “Our race for Don Crouse will be a non-points race. There was just too much going on with the fair and everything to do it earlier than that.”

The race is being sponsored by all Alleghany County fire departments and the Rescue Squad, headed up by the Cherry Lane Volunteer Fire Department. Crouse is retired from that department.

Admission to the event is $5 for adults with children under age 8 admitted free. Concessions will be sold by the fire departments and each department will have fire equipment on display at the race.
