Town merchants plan Labor Day events

Several events are scheduled to be held in Sparta next Saturday, from a flea market to a dog show.

The Sparta Garden Center, located at 104 N. Main St., will hold registration for the first annual My Best Friends Charity Dog Show, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Registration will be held in the area behind the business. Every dog that is registered for a $5 entry fee will win a prize and must be present at 3 p.m. for the judging.

Gary and Barbara Halsey note the event is being held to “raise funds and awareness of the Alleghany Animal Shelter.” A tax-deductible receipt will be given to individuals paying the entry fee or making donations to the shelter.

“The shelter provides food, supplies and any medical treatment necessary while displaced dogs are in temporary residence at the shelter,” Mrs. Halsey said. “Their goal is to find (permanent) homes for the dogs that end up at the shelter. The shelter is non-profit and survives only by the generosity of donations and services provided by the (Twin Oaks) Veterinary Hospital. Without your support, these dogs would not be given the time the shelter provides to find new families.”

She added that some of the dogs from the shelter will be on hand “so that people can get a look at them and realize they are wonderful dogs.” Categories of the show include smallest dog, fattest dog, dog with the fastest wagging tail, best-dressed dog and fluffiest dog.
