Relay for Life is this weekend

The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life has been slated to begin at 6 p.m. Aug. 12 and conclude Aug. 13 at Crouse Park.

In recent years, the event has been held at Alleghany High School’s Woodruff Field. Last year’s event was held in late July.

Chairman Michelle DeBord said the organizers wanted to coordinate the relay with the opening of the school year.

This year, the relay has a luau theme, complete with a comedy ‘Queen Relakahuna Pageant,’ in which several local men will impersonate Hawaiian princesses. The one who raises the most money will be crowned queen,” DeBord said.

Those in attendance during the hours of the main events, slated for 6 p.m. until 11 p.m., will be entertained by performances by Uncle Nave and the Cranberry Creek Boys, R.G. Absher, the Alleghany Jubilee Dancers and the Heritage Square Dancers. DeBord noted that performances by local choirs, the First Baptist of Sparta Youth Choir and Saved by Grace choir, are slated for the following morning.
