Two events are set for Saturday

Two vastly different celebrations of days gone by are planned this weekend in different parts of Alleghany County. The 19th annual Brinegar Days Festival is slated for Saturday and Sunday, while a car show, dance and music event will be held at the Alleghany County Fairgrounds all day on Saturday.

Brinegar Days

The 19th annual “Brinegar Days” Festival is Saturday, Aug. 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 7 from noon to 4 p.m. The festival is free of charge.

Children can participate in activities throughout the weekend. Cultural demonstrations on Aug. 6 will include: quilting, blacksmithing, old time and mountain music, shaped note singing, flax processing, woodworking, horse and wagon team, open hearth cooking, spinning, weaving, natural dyeing and other affairs of “plain living.”

On Sunday, Aug. 7, the event will focus on local and community history. Staff and historians will present oral history workshops and presentations about the history of the local area. Park rangers with expertise in photograph preservation and scrapbooking workshops will be available for questions throughout the day.

Demonstrations of flax processing, spinning, knitting, weaving and quilting will accompany the workshops. Local historical societies will share knowledge with visitors.
