An asphalt plant is eyeing a location near the former Laurel Springs School on N.C. 18, just south of Laurel Springs Baptist Church. The location is north of the intersection of N.C. 88 and N.C. 18.
A Sparta man was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill after an altercation involving a knife on July 20 at the Kangaroo Express (formerly The Pantry) on Main Street in Sparta.
A truck driver from Spindale was convicted July 21 in Wilkes District Court of misdemeanor death by vehicle in a fiery collision on U.S. 21 South which claimed the life of an Alleghany County woman on Nov. 22, according to Trooper J.R. Hall of the N.C. Highway Patrol.

Western North Carolina’s economy continued strong positive growth during May, as measured by the Western North Carolina Economic Index compiled at Appalachian State University. The regional economy increased .2 percent in May, said the report.

Lois Edwards took home the top two ribbons after The Alleghany Quilters Guild’s Annual Quilt Show last Friday and Saturday in the Emerson Black Building at the Alleghany County Fairgrounds.
Vickie Scott, the newest director of Alleghany Christians Associated for Relief and Emergency Service, has learned to follow her intuition and go through open doors. Scott took the position June 20, replacing Mitzi Biggins, who resigned from the position.
