For the past year, local residents have been able to get assistance from the Solid Rock Food Closet on Macedonia Church Road in times of need.
The non-profit organization, which was formed from the Crisis Food Closet located in the Sparta First Baptist Church, relocated to its current location in June 2004.
Hearing the words of some of the clients of the organization makes it apparent how important the food closet is to local residents. (The clients are not identified by name to preserve their privacy). One such client, a low-income resident in the county, commented her income “does not afford me any extra bills,” she said. “I don’t go to the food closet every month, but I know it’s there. I know I can get the staples I need to get me through the month.”
The woman continued, noting that she is well-treated at the closet. “When you go to the food closet, you are received cordially and with respect,” she said. “Most low-income people don’t like to ask for help, but they have to.”
Other clients spoke of their appreciation of the service. “The food closet came through at a time when no one else could or would,” another client said.
A third client stated he was unable to work all the time. “This helps us a lot,” he said on behalf of his family. “I don’t know what we’d do if we didn’t have the food closet.”
A fourth client shared this sentiment: “The food is great."
