Two events are planned at the Alleghany Fairgrounds this weekend — the annual New River Shrine Club Car Show and the Quilter’s Guild’s quilt show.

Car Show

The 26th annual car show will begin on Friday, July 22 at the Alleghany Fairgrounds with a barbecue supper from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. The supper will cost $5 per plate. After the supper, car enthusiasts will ride through downtown Sparta from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. in what is being billed as a “cruise-by parade.”

The actual car show will begin the following day, Saturday, at 8 a.m. and last until 3 p.m. Admission for that event is $5, but children under 12 get in free.

Last year, a total of 133 vehicles were entered in the show.

“We expect a good showing again this year,” said event spokesperson Cliff Phillips.

Quilt Show

The Alleghany Quilters Guild will host its ninth annual quilt show at the Emerson Black Exhibition Building at the Alleghany Fairgrounds. There is no admission charge for the show.

The show begins at noon on Friday and closes at 6 p.m. It will then re-open at 10 a.m. on Saturday and end at 4 p.m. The winners of the show will be announced at the end of the day Saturday.

The event will feature displays of the work of local and area quilters, as well as audience participation.

“We’ll have viewers choice awards,” said Guild Treasurer Delta Peterson. “We’re also going to have a collection of antique quilts on display.”

A vendor will also be offering quilt fabrics and notions during the show.

The guild will be selling tickets for a queen-sized hand-quilted quilt with a sampler pattern.
