Two more town residents have filed as candidates for the Nov. 8 Town of Sparta election at the Alleghany Board of Elections. Two town council seats and the office of mayor are up for election.
Filing were incumbent Councilman Mike Parlier of Carson Boulevard and challenger George K. Vaughn of Riverview Drive in Sparta. Parlier filed on July 6, while Vaughn filed on July 15. Parlier was first elected to council in 2001.
Filing July 1 were incumbents Mayor John Miller and Councilman John Brady.
With only two seats on council open, the election is now contested with three candidates.
According to Director of Elections Karen K. Fender, any registered voter residing within town limits may file for office. Prospective candidates are asked to complete a notice of candidacy form, along with a statement of organization, certification of treasurer, certification of threshold and certification of financial account information.
For a $5 filing fee, interested individuals can file Monday through Friday from 8 a.m until 4:30 p.m., except for the final day of filing, Aug. 5, on which date filing will close at noon.
