All Alleghany County Schools will open their doors to students on Aug. 5.
The county’s three elementary schools — Sparta, Glade Creek and Piney Creek — will begin with a half day on Aug. 5, ending at 11:30 a.m.
Lunch will be served to the students prior to dismissal, but breakfast will not be served. Buses will be running their regular routes that day. In addition, all three elementary schools are scheduled to have a Meet the Teacher Day Aug. 4 from 11 a.m until 6 p.m.
Alleghany High School will also open to the general student population on Aug. 5 with a half day of school, ending at noon. Students will be served lunch prior to dismissal, but breakfast will not be served. However, incoming AHS freshmen have the opportunity to attend school an additional half day on Aug. 4, according to high school principal Judd Starling. Freshmen will also be served lunch on that day, but not breakfast.
The day “to celebrate ninth graders” will be held Aug. 4 from 8 a.m. until noon, according to Starling. The students will have the option of riding the school bus, although they will only be picking up AHS freshmen that day.
“It isn’t mandatory, but it’s highly recommended,” Starling said at a meeting of the Alleghany County Board of Education on July 6. “Students are going to get their books and their lockers and spend time with their teachers in their classes. Students will also be able to ask any questions they might have.”
Freshmen will also take part in a Making it Count assembly, and eating in the school cafeteria.
Starling noted that coming in, freshmen can be intimidated and he hopes the orientation day will help.
“Some of them are going to come that were one of 16 from Piney Creek,”
Starling said. “Now they’re one of 450. It can be overwhelming to them.” Superintendent Duane Davis stated, “It’s a great concept, I hope it works out.”
