Pickers and fans of bluegrass and old time music will gather in Sparta this Friday and Saturday, July 15 and 16, for the 11th annual Alleghany County Fiddler's Convention.
It will be held at the Higgins Agricultural Fairgrounds on U.S. 21 North, just outside the Sparta city limits.
“Fans will see a continuous show of competition and entertainment Friday night, all day Saturday and Saturday night,” said Trever Nichols of the Sparta-Alleghany Volunteer Fire Department, event sponsors. The convention will have competition for junior and senior bands and individuals in old time and bluegrass categories. Winners will share $2,850 in cash prizes and will also receive ribbons.
Uncle Nave Blevins and the Cranberry Creek Boys from Sparta will open the convention with a show of music and comedy at 5 p.m. Friday. Competition gets underway Friday at 6 p.m. for all categories and will continue until all who want to compete that night have played. Contests resume Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Then, dance competition, special entertainment and junior awards will take the stage until time for the senior band playoffs at 7:30 p.m.
“The senior band championship is always a favorite of the audience. All the best bluegrass and old time bands will return to the stage for playoffs,” Nichols said.
This segment features the top 15 bluegrass and top 15 old time bands as judged in competition Friday night and Saturday.
Awards will be given for all senior categories at the end of the night. Cloggers will entertain periodically throughout the convention, Nichols said.
Tickets are $6 for Friday, $7 for Saturday, or $10 for both days.
Children under 12 are admitted free with a paying adult.
