A lot is happening in Sparta over the July 4th weekend, according to information from the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce. Merchants are making an extra effort to bring a little old-fashioned charm into the independence celebration. Free watermelon, hula hoop contests and live music are just a few of the planned activities. Most activities are offered free of charge.
In addition, the annual Lions Club All-Game Horse Show will be at the Alleghany County Fairgrounds and has been expanded from two days to three — Friday through Sunday. Admission for spectators is only $3. The Horse Show begins at 6 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday. Sunday, a cowboy church service will be held at 9 a.m. No admission is charged for the service and the public is invited to attend. The show resumes at 10 a.m.
“A number of the merchants met and decided they wanted to make the holiday weekend more of a celebration,” said Bob Bamberg, chamber director. “The theme Old-Fashioned Celebration was chosen. Many of the merchants will be holding special activities and their employees will be dressed in period attire.”
There will be free watermelon at the gazebo at Trojan Village Shopping Center from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday through Monday. For individuals interested in crafts, the Arts and Crafts Store, 36 North Main, and Cater Pots, 209 Antioch Church Road, will be holding an open house from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each of the four days. The traditional Golden Oldies 50s celebration that begins earlier in the week at Lowe’s Food, with rock tunes and female employees in poodle skirts and the men in jeans, continues through the weekend.
Highlights
