The members of the Alleghany County School Board approved the hiring of Charles B. Evans as the new band director for Sparta School and Alleghany High School following a June 14 personnel session.
Evans, 23, is a recent graduate of Appalachian State University. Born and raised in Canton, he grew up with parents with a musical background.
“While I was in the sixth grade, there was an open band day and we got to explore different instruments,” he said. “My dad was a trumpet player and choir director at his church. My mom was the piano player at same church, so they had some musical background.
Naturally, I just picked up on it. I got started on it in the sixth grade and it hooked me ever since.”
However, upon graduation from Pisgah High School, Evans attended North
Carolina State University where he majored in mechanical engineering.
