Dr. Murugananthan Subbiah is an internal medicine specialist who currently practices medicine at the Blue Ridge Cardiology office in Sparta.
Dr. Subbiah, known as Murug by friends and family, moved here from Ohio about a year ago with his wife, Rebecca, a state-licensed dietitian who practices in Elkin and Sparta.
Dr. Subbiah noted a desire to move to the States at a young age and fulfilled the dream, coming to America and practicing medicine. Growing up in Southern India, Dr. Subbiah had a desire to become a doctor at a young age.
“The idea was reinforced, especially by my father,” he said. “I wanted to help people as well and it has been very satisfying for me.”
His siblings also went into the medical profession, Dr. Subbiah stated. His brother is currently a resident in Cleveland, Ohio training to become a cancer specialist. His sister, who is currently in England, is a pediatrician.
Subbiah explained how he came to the United States.
“While I was in India, I took my American exams,” he said. “I moved to England initially to get further training in medicine and then, I came to this country.” Dr. Subbiah works full-time here in Sparta and in the mornings at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. He added that he also performs exercise stress testing on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at the Elkin office of Blue Ridge Cardiology.
Dr. Subbiah stated his wife is in Sparta twice a month.
“She goes to all the different practices belonging to Blue Ridge
Cardiology.”
