Small business owners in Alleghany County have only a few weeks left to file for some small business loans to aid in recovery from hurricane damage
Duane Edgar “Dewey” Brooks was arrested on May 24 and charged with first degree murder in the death of his son, 31-year-old Benjamin Howard Hartman, according to warrants filed by Capt. Carlton Edwards of the Alleghany Sheriff’s Department.
Alleghany High School band director John Black III recently submitted his resignation to the Alleghany County Board of Education, leaving the system to search for a fourth band director in five years.

Soon after being covered with “silly string” by the graduates, Principal Judd Starling asked the audience to rise for the recessional as the Alleghany High School class of 2005 walked away from Woodruff Field and up the stairs through a stadium filled with family and well-wishers on May 27.
Tomorrow, June 3, at 5 p.m. marks the deadline for applications to be received for the position of superintendent of Alleghany County Schools.

A demolition derby that had been planned for Saturday night has been cancelled, said a spokesperson for the Alleghany County Fair Committee.
About 30 people honored veterans by attending the brief Memorial Day service held by the Bruce Wayne Osborne Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7034 on the courthouse lawn Sunday afternoon.
