As couples learn of an addition to the family, excitement of the future quickly follows, with trips to purchase baby merchandise from cribs to clothes.
Jan Guynn, director of Alleghany Developmental Day, noted that one thing some prospective Alleghany parents do is call her and put their unborn child on the center’s waiting list.
Developmental Day is the only five-star day care center in the county, implying high quality service, according to Guynn. The star rating system was instituted several years ago to help parents rank providers.
“We were the first and we’ve been the only center in the county to achieve that,” Guynn said. “We’re the only licensed Developmental Day and we’re the only non-profit in the county as well. I think that makes a difference in quality. Any money that comes into our program doesn’t go into someone’s pocket, it goes back into the program to provide a higher quality of service for the children. I think parents are becoming more educated about child care and demanding a higher quality. I think that’s the biggest reason our waiting list has swelled so. Parents are aware of what high quality center should be and they’re asking for that.”
There are currently 40 children on the waiting list.
