After two years as assistant principal at Alleghany High School, Mike Edwards recently accepted the position of principal at Piney Creek Elementary. The position will be vacated by Phil Howell at the end of the school year upon the completion of his sixth year as principal. A native of Alleghany, Edwards and his wife Debbie are graduates of Alleghany High, classes ‘73 and ‘74 respectively, and the couple have two grown children, 21-year-old Amanda and 24-year-old Travis. Mrs. Edwards works as a nursing supervisor at the health department in Ashe County.

Meanwhile, Mr. Edwards has 25 years of experience in the education field, coaching and teaching for the first 20 in Wilkes and Ashe counties. There he “taught about everything at one time or another” and was head coach in five different varsity sports.

“I was coach of the year four times in three different sports, boy’s basketball, girl’s basketball and district seven baseball coach of the year,” he said.

Upon receiving a masters in school administration from Appalachian State University in 2000, Edwards began his three-year tenure in Wilkes County Schools.
