The Alleghany County Board of Commissioners received budget requests totaling about $11.5 million on Monday night.
The county released preliminary requests from its general fund, which includes most county departments. The requests are the first step in the budget process.
After the departments make requests, those requests are then scrutinized by the county manager, who then makes recommendations to the board. The commissioners hold workshops and budget hearings before approving their final budget in late June. Any or all of the requests can be approved, denied or modified by the commissioners.
Requests were up slightly from last year’s approved budget of $11,500,355. The requests for 2005-2006 totalled $11,542,415.
Also included were capital requests, which include all new purchases, totaling $123,329. Among the smaller requests were a computer and printer for the planning/recreation department for $1,500, two computers for building inspections for $2,500, a $500 tractor-feed printer for the ambulance service, a $2,400 copier for cooperative extension, $1,616 in Department of Justice grant capital for emergency management (if not spent by June 30) and $2,800 for two computers for social services.
Larger requests came from tax administration ($38,400), mapping
($42,553) and the register of deeds ($31,060). As for the tax office,
requests included an $18,000 vehicle, $15,000 for new furniture,
$2,048 for a backup system, two computers for $1,660 each, $500 for a
public access printer, $700 for Microsoft Access software, and $500 for
a digital camera.
