Books ‘N Friends used bookstore is making an expansion of a new kind on March 1.

The bookstore, a supportive arm of the Alleghany Public Library, will begin opening six days a week. Hours at the shop, located at 35 North Main Street, will be Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Mondays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday hours may be expanded during summer and fall seasons, said Alice Keighton, bookstore manager.

The store will celebrate the change with light refreshments on March 1 from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m.

The bookstore first opened in March of 2003 and has expanded twice already in its brief existence. The store first expanded in August of 2003, doubling in size from 400 square feet to 800 square feet. The store then made a large expansion in March 2004, increasing to its current size of 1,800 square feet.

Keighton said the store has been well received by its customers, noting that some are ecstatic to find books they may have been in search of for years. “We had one lady come in here to shop and she suddenly let out a big scream and said, ‘I’ve been looking for this for years!’ That’s what’s fun.”

Books for the store all are donated, some through the library and others directly to the bookstore.
