With help of Lidjea Andrews, the Alleghany County Schools’ tobacco prevention coordinator, Alleghany youth are working their way towards a 100 percent tobacco-free school environment.

“My main focus is middle school and high school because that’s the prime age when kids start contemplating using tobacco,” Andrews said. “The tobacco companies focus on that age group as well. I will also be working with the youth advocacy clubs (one in each school) and also working on school policy focusing on revising the tobacco policy.” Andrews further explained that her job will be to focus on revising the present tobacco policy.

“Hopefully, we’ll be able to change it where it states no tobacco products will be used by anyone at anytime on all school property,” she said.
