After leaving the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce a little more than a month ago, Mitzi Biggins wasn’t really looking for a new job.

However, Biggins, who formerly worked as the chamber’s administrative assistant, was intrigued when she read an advertisement about Alleghany Christians Associated for Relief and Emergency Services (CARES) needing a new director.

She decided to go for an interview and was surprised at how well she fit in with the CARES mission.

“She was a perfect fit,” said Joann Leatherland, who is leaving as CARES director after two-and-one-half years. Leatherland took the helm at CARES on April 1, 2002, she recalls with a laugh.

“It was time for me to retire,” she said. “I talked with my husband about it and we both agreed that it was the right time.”

Leatherland plans to stay on as a volunteer at CARES. “I’m really looking forward to watching Mitzi grow into the job and I know all the volunteers will have a good time with her.”

Biggins said she had always admired the goals and mission of CARES.
