County approves new director for extension

George Stancil, a long-time North Carolina Cooperative Extension Agent in Wilkes County, was officially approved on Dec. 20 as the new director of the Alleghany County Cooperative Extension.

Stancil’s appointment is effective Jan. 1. He was earlier approved by Dr. Jon Ort, director of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service at N.C. State University. Half of Stancil’s salary is paid by county government, while the remainder is paid by the college.

Stancil has been based in Wilkes County since 1989, where he served as an area specialized agent for information management since 1995. From 1992-1995, Stancil was an area specialized agent for swine and from 1989 through 1992, he was an area specialized agent for dairy farming. As an area specialized agent, Stancil worked in a number of counties, including Alleghany.

The new director first worked for the N.C. Cooperative Extension in 1977 as a summer intern in Rockingham County. He joined extension the next year as a livestock and forage agent in Franklin County. He also worked as a livestock and forage agent in Wilson and Catawba counties before moving to Wilkes.

Stancil holds a bachelor’s degree in animal science and a master’s degree in adult and community college education.
